SCORECARD
The box below shows how many parishes have recevied permission from the Archbishop to use the Formation in Christian Chastity program. If a parish is not on this list, it may be in the process of receiving permission, or more likely is using the controversial Talking About Touching program.
Quotable
"Parents are the first and most important educators of their children, and they also possess a fundamental competency in this area: they are educators because they are parents."
-Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality #23
60 Second Summary
Background
As a part of their Charter for the Protection of Young People, the U.S. Bishops have mandated safe environment training in all Catholic schools and religious education programs across the country including our archdiocese.
The Problem
If your child or children attend Catholic schools or are enrolled in a religious education program (CCD) they most likely will be exposed to the safe environments curriculm chosen by our archdiocese.
While parents have been assured these programs are age appropriate and are not sex education, many parents who have reviewed the curriculum disagree with this assessment.
The Talking About Touching curriculum which is the standard chosen for all Catholic schools and religious education programs in grades PreK-4 encourages teaching children about their private parts, using anatomically correct terminology, and presents graphic abuse scenarios in the classroom starting in 2nd grade.
What You Can Do
The Archbishop has allowed parents to opt out, and has allowed pastors who are concerned about this curriculm to petition in writing Archbishop Flynn directly to request an alternative program that meets the requirements of the Charter. The Formation in Christian Chastity Program (FICC) is an approved Catholic alternative that is primarily home-based, with classroom content focusing on the Church's moral teachings and virtues rather than graphic scenarios. The Archbishop has already approved the use of this program in several schools and parishes.
We recommend contacting your pastor to find out what curriculum your parish or school is using, and encourage your pastor to seek permission to use the FICC program in your parish or school.
